Putting the rubbish out used to be easy. One bin for everything; no thought required. But in recent years we have all bought in to a more sustainable way of dealing with our waste. We are also thinking more carefully about the environmental impact when we shop for food, clothes and even holidays. 

Choosing a new car used to be a ‘fit and forget’ activity. We bought one we liked and drove it without thinking about the harm it might be doing. 

Things are different now. If we want to continue to enjoy the freedom of private motoring, we must also change what we drive and how we drive it. That is starting to happen, but there are barriers in the way.

Range anxiety is preventing many consumers from making the switch to a fully electric car, while plug-in hybrids are being misused by drivers who don’t understand how to get the best out of the complex technology. 

A hybrid, plug-in hybrid, fully electric car or even a conventional petrol or diesel car with switchable driving modes won’t be at its most efficient without some driver interaction. The car won’t do all the work for you.

Filling the tank of a conventional petrol- or diesel-engined car was no more than a minor inconvenience, and journeys rarely had to be planned in advance to avoid running out of fuel. That is changing. An electric car requires its driver to think more about where to recharge and how long it will take.

We must all take more responsibility for the environmental impact of our driving, but for many people this requires a change in mindset. Car manufacturers have taken enormous strides in the development of cleaner and more efficient powertrains, but we must work with the new technology to maximise those advances.
